Strength in Partnership
The tutulshenam Healing House is envisioned as a place of care, connection, and renewal for the shíshálh people and surrounding communities. Rooted in the shíshálh Nation’s culture and teachings, it will provide a safe and welcoming space where healing can happen in ways that honour First Nations knowledge and support whole-person wellness.
This Case for Support is made possible through the strength of partnership—led by the shíshálh Nation, in collaboration with the First Nations Health Foundation, the First Nations Heath Authority, the Province of British Columbia as well as the Government of Canada.
Together, we are building more than a facility, we are building a future where health and healing are guided by community, culture, and resilience.“The tutulshenam Healing House is envisioned as a place of care, connection, and renewal for the shíshálh people and surrounding communities. The shíshálh Nation is located on the Sechelt Peninsula of the Sunshine Coast, 50 kilometres northwest of Vancouver. The shíshálh swiya – meaning world or birthplace – covers 514,520 hectares (1,271,407 acres) that stretch from x?enichen (northern end of Jervis Inlet) to kalpilin (Pender Harbour), and from kwekwenis (Lang Bay) in the west and xwesam (Roberts Creek) in the southeast.
shíshálh Nation’s mission is to be the governing entity responsible for the stewardship and protection of the shíshálh people’s relationship to the lands and resources of our territory. We undertake this work in a manner which enhances our way of life, maximizes our people’s self-sufficiency, and respects our customary laws, the exercising of our Title and Rights, international legal standards, and the common law.
The First Nations Health Foundation (FNHF) is the first and only foundation of its kind, serving as a bold model of philanthropy and partnership that bridges funding and knowledge gaps to accelerate equitable and culturally safe healthcare for First Nations people in BC. Rooted in First Nations knowledge and ways of being, we are committed to honouring diverse cultures, languages, and the wholistic wellness of communities.
The FNHF’s vision is for First Nations people in BC to have self-determined health and wellness to realize their full potential. Guided by core values of innovation, respect, reciprocity, responsibility, and relationships, we foster meaningful, long-term partnerships with First Nations communities, the First Nations Health Authority, and donors. Together, we inspire people everywhere to contribute to this vital work, creating a lasting legacy of wellness for the next
seven generations.
The FNHA is the health and wellness partner to over 200 diverse First Nations communities and citizens across BC.
In 2013, the FNHA began a new era in BC First Nations health governance and health care delivery by taking responsibility for the programs and services formerly delivered by Health Canada. Since then the FNHA has been working to address service gaps through new partnerships, closer collaboration, health systems innovation, reform and redesign of health programs and services for individuals, families, communities and Nations.
The FNHA is also a champion of culturally safe practices throughout the broader health care system. Taking a leadership role, the FNHA actively works with its health partners to embed cultural safety and humility into health service delivery and improve health outcomes for First Nations people.
